Summer is Here !!

Summer is Here,

Finally what everyone has waited on Summer is Here! Summer is here which means mowing, mulching, planting and lawn seeding. Mowing is a part of life we do not like to do but we have it to do. I recommend mowing on 3.5 or higher this helps with weed control and pest control and makes the lawn look alot better in dryer weather like July and August. Mowing short allows weeds to grow quickly because they are not shaded out by the long grass stems. Also I here this alot if I mow shorter I wont have to mow as often well you are so wrong all your doing is making youself work harder and living a more stressful life. Mow weekly and be done.

Mulching is a good practice if done correctly. No one should mulch more than 3 inches at a time and do not pile mulch around the trees and plant material as this is very harmful to both. In the Industry we call it Volcanoing this is where there is a large pile of mulch going up the tree or shrub. We recommend to our clients to remove mulch about every other season or so depending on how mulch was installed. Correctly installed mulch can give benefits like retaining moisture for the plant material, keep the plant material cool and protect the plant material from stem damage from pest. If your not mulching yearly you should loosen the mulch yearly so water can get to the plant material mulch will harden and act as a barrier. We try not to seed in hotter weather months because it becomes a issue of keeping the seed damp and not drying out and most people go on vacation and the week they are on vacation the seed will dry out and become weeds. I recommend waiting until Fall now to plant. September is a great month to seed in our area.

PLANTS,

Plants are like humans they get hot and thirsty. In weather like this I recommend you water daily or at least three times weekly to help your plant out. New plant material will need water daily or they will die from heat scorch and root burn. The best way for trees and plants are watering bags. If you can’t afford the bags take 5 gal buckets and drill very small holes in the bottom and fill them and set them at the plant rotating the bucket so all sides get water equally. This will help the plant alot and make them much heathier in the long run. Not sure what to do please feel free to contact our trained staff and they will help you get through the heat related questions.  STAY COOL!!
